Best DSC Token in India 2026 — mToken vs HYP2003 vs ProxKey vs ePass2003 comparison

Every Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate lives inside a USB crypto token — and with the FIPS 140-3 switch arriving in September 2026, choosing the right one matters more than ever. Here is a plain-English comparison of the four tokens you will actually see in India — mToken CryptoID, Hypersecu HYP2003, Watchdata WD ProxKey and ePass2003 — so you can pick the best one for your situation.

Quick answer

  • Buying a fresh DSC or renewing after Sept 2026? Choose a FIPS 140-3 token — the mToken CryptoID or the HYP2003.
  • Need a proven, everyday, budget token for existing use? The Watchdata WD ProxKey (FIPS 140-2 Level 3) is dependable and widely deployed.
  • On a Mac or Linux? mToken and HYP2003 support all three operating systems.

Side-by-side comparison

Token FIPS level OS support Best for From
mToken CryptoID FIPS 140-3 Level 3 Windows · macOS · Linux New DSC / renewal after Sept 2026 ₹365
HYP2003 FIPS 140-3 Level 3 Windows · macOS · Linux (driver-free) Premium, future-proof pick ₹465
WD ProxKey FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Windows 7–11 · macOS · Linux Proven, everyday, cost-effective ₹390
ePass2003 FIPS 140-2 Windows · macOS · Linux Legacy / existing certificates Varies

Prices are indicative per-token starting rates at volume; actual price depends on quantity and current stock.

FIPS 140-2 vs FIPS 140-3 — why it decides your choice

FIPS 140 is the security standard for the token hardware that holds your signing key. FIPS 140-3 is the newer, stronger version. Per the CCA directive, from September 2026 every fresh DSC download and renewal must use a FIPS 140-3 token. That single rule splits the four tokens into two camps: mToken and HYP2003 are FIPS 140-3 (safe for new issuance), while ProxKey and ePass2003 are FIPS 140-2 (fine for certificates already loaded, but not for new issuance after the deadline). Full detail is in our guide on the FIPS 140-3 transition.

The tokens in detail

mToken CryptoID — the future-proof all-rounder

FIPS 140-3 Level 3, a 32-bit smart-card chip, RSA 2048 and ECDSA support, and drivers for Windows, macOS and Linux. If you are getting a new certificate now, the mToken is the safe default — it already meets the 2026 rule and is keenly priced from ₹365 in volume.

HYP2003 — premium and driver-free

Hypersecu's HYP2003 is also FIPS 140-3 Level 3, supports RSA up to 4096, and is driver-free on most systems — Windows, macOS and Linux recognise it natively. A great choice for professionals who want a premium, low-hassle token.

WD ProxKey — the proven workhorse

The Watchdata WD ProxKey (FIPS 140-2 Level 3) is one of India's most widely used DSC tokens — reliable, PIN-protected and cost-effective. Ideal if you already sign day-to-day and do not yet need FIPS 140-3.

ePass2003 — the legacy standard

ePass2003 (by Feitian) has been the default DSC token for years and is FIPS 140-2. Millions of existing certificates run on it, and its auto-driver also supports the HYP2003. For new issuance after September 2026, though, you will need a FIPS 140-3 token instead.

Which should you buy?

  • Getting a fresh DSC or renewing near/after Sept 2026: mToken or HYP2003.
  • Want the lowest-cost dependable token for current use: WD ProxKey.
  • Using a Mac: mToken or HYP2003 (both have macOS support).
  • Buying in bulk (resellers, CAs, companies): all three have volume pricing — see quantity slabs.

Don't forget the driver

Whichever token you pick, it needs the matching driver to be detected. We host genuine installers for Windows, macOS and Linux: mToken driver, HYP2003 driver and ProxKey driver. If a token is not recognised, see our token not detected fix guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which DSC token is best in 2026?
For a new DSC or renewal from September 2026, choose a FIPS 140-3 token like the mToken CryptoID or HYP2003. The Watchdata ProxKey (FIPS 140-2) is still a solid pick for existing certificates. The best token matches your OS, budget and FIPS need.
Does the token depend on which CA issued my certificate?
No. Any CCA-licensed CA's Class 3 DSC can be downloaded onto any compliant token. The driver depends on the token hardware, not the CA.
Is mToken or ProxKey better?
The mToken CryptoID is FIPS 140-3 Level 3 and works on Windows, macOS and Linux, so it is future-proof. The ProxKey is FIPS 140-2 Level 3, Windows-focused and cost-effective. Pick the mToken if you need FIPS 140-3 or Mac support.
Can I reuse my old token for a new DSC?
You can if it has free slots, but from September 2026 a fresh DSC or renewal must go onto a FIPS 140-3 token. If your old token is FIPS 140-2, you will need a FIPS 140-3 token for new issuance after the deadline.
