Reseller vs Distributor vs Franchise: Which DSC Partnership Fits You?

When you decide to sell Digital Signature Certificates, you'll usually be offered three ways in: distributor, franchise or reseller. They're not just different names — they suit very different goals. Here's a plain-English comparison so you can pick the one that fits where you are today.

The reseller (or agent)

This is the simplest way to start. You sell DSCs to your own customers at a price you set, and earn the margin on each one. There's no investment to begin, no stock, and no commitment — ideal if you have a local network of businesses and want to start earning quickly. Most partners start here.

The distributor

A distributor operates at higher volume and gets better rates in return. The key difference: you can onboard your own sub-resellers and earn on everything they sell, not just your direct sales. This suits someone who wants to build a small network and earn from a team, not just themselves.

The franchise partner

A franchise partner runs a branded DSC outlet with the deepest rates, priority support and often a defined territory. It's the most committed model, best for those who want DSCs to be a core part of their business with a recognisable local presence.

How they compare

  • Investment: Reseller – none; Distributor – low; Franchise – higher commitment.
  • Rates / margin: improve as you move from reseller to distributor to franchise.
  • Sub-resellers: distributors and franchise partners can build a downline; resellers sell direct.
  • Support: all get support; distributors and franchise partners get priority and account management.

So which should you choose?

If you're just starting or testing the market, begin as a reseller — there's nothing to lose and you can upgrade anytime. As your monthly volume grows, move up to distributor to unlock better rates and a downline, or go franchise when you want a branded, territory-led DSC business. The beauty of it is you don't have to decide everything now — you can grow into the next level. Learn more on our Become a Partner page.
