Buying a DSC is the easy part — getting it to actually work on the Income Tax portal is where most people get stuck. The good news: it's a one-time setup. Follow these steps in order and you'll be signing returns within minutes, with fixes ready for the errors that trip everyone up.
Before you start — what you need
- Your Class 3 DSC on its USB token, plugged into the computer.
- The token driver installed (ePass, ProxKey, etc. — supplied with your token).
- The emsigner / emBridge utility from the Income Tax portal, installed and running.
- Your e-filing login, and a browser like Chrome or Firefox.
Step 1 — Install the token driver
Insert the USB token and install the driver for your token brand. Windows should detect the token; if not, install the driver from the manufacturer or the disc/link that came with it. The token's light usually glows when detected.
Step 2 — Install and run emsigner
Download the emsigner (emBridge) utility from the e-filing portal and install it. Run it as administrator so it stays active in the background — the portal communicates with your token through it.
Step 3 — Register the DSC on the portal
- Log in to incometax.gov.in with your credentials.
- Go to My Profile → Register DSC.
- Enter the email linked to your DSC, tick the consent box and click Continue.
- Select your provider and certificate, enter the token PIN/password, and click Sign.
- You'll see a confirmation that your DSC is registered successfully.
Step 4 — Use the DSC to e-verify / sign
When filing a return or form, choose "Verify using DSC", select your certificate, enter the PIN and sign. Your return is submitted with full legal validity.
Common DSC errors & fixes
- "emsigner not running" — open the emsigner utility and keep it running; refresh the page.
- Token not detected — reinstall the token driver, try another USB port, and make sure the token light is on.
- "Certificate not found" — confirm the DSC isn't expired and the PAN on the DSC matches your profile.
- Browser blocking it — allow the localhost connection emsigner uses, or try a different supported browser.
- Wrong PIN locked the token — repeated wrong PINs can lock some tokens; use the token tool to reset, or contact your provider.
Most "DSC not working" problems come down to two things: the token driver isn't installed, or emsigner isn't running. Check those first.
When to renew
If your certificate has expired, registration will fail — you'll need a fresh DSC. See our guide on how to renew a DSC.
