DSC Not Working? Fix Common Token & emSigner Errors

There's a special kind of panic that hits when your DSC won't work and a filing deadline is hours away. The good news: almost every "DSC not working" problem comes down to a handful of fixable causes. Here's how to diagnose and fix them, fast.

1. Token not detected

If your computer doesn't see the USB token:

  • Make sure the token driver (ePass, ProxKey, etc.) is installed — this is the #1 cause.
  • Try a different USB port, and check that the token's light glows.
  • Restart the token utility, or reinstall the driver from the manufacturer.

2. "emSigner not running"

Portals like Income Tax and GST talk to your token through the emSigner / emBridge utility. If you see this error: open emSigner, run it as administrator, leave it running in the background, then refresh the page. If it still fails, reinstall the latest emSigner from the portal.

3. "Certificate not found" or wrong certificate

  • Confirm the certificate hasn't expired — an expired DSC simply won't appear.
  • Check that the PAN on the certificate matches your portal profile.
  • Make sure the certificate is registered on that portal first.

4. Browser is blocking it

emSigner runs a small local connection that some browsers block. Allow the localhost/SSL prompt, try a supported browser (Chrome or Firefox), and clear the browser cache if needed.

5. Token PIN locked

Too many wrong PIN attempts can lock some tokens. Use the token's own management tool to reset it with the admin PIN — or contact your provider if it's fully locked.

6. Java or utility issues

Older portals may need a specific Java version. Keep your token utility and emSigner updated, and avoid running two signing utilities at once, which can conflict.

90% of the time it's one of two things: the token driver isn't installed, or emSigner isn't running. Check those first and you'll save yourself a lot of stress.

Still stuck?

If the certificate itself has expired, you'll need a fresh one — see how to renew a DSC. For a new certificate or token, a DSC Buddy partner can get you sorted the same day.
